At Innovative Solar Systems, LLC (ISS) our principals were recently shocked to find out that one of billionaire Warren Buffet’s subsidiaries has just announced plans to purchase a 550 MWH solar farm to be built inCalifornia. In the past, Warren Buffet’s companies have included insurance companies and other core businesses like railroads but have not involved solar systems. Obviously, Warren realizes that PV (photovoltaic) solar systems will be required for many states to meet their mandated renewable energy targets in the future. In addition, with income derived from tax subsidies, PPAs (Power Purchase Agreements) and RECs (Renewable Energy Certificates), a very stable business model can be built.

Smaller Solar Systems Will be Common

At ISS our principals still believe that while some large Photovoltaic solar farms will be built, we believe that smaller solar systems in the 1 MW range will be more commonplace. The smaller solar farms require less permitting and approvals and can be designed and installed much quicker. In addition, smaller solar systems don’t require access to large high voltage transmission lines and can be installed most anywhere that 3 phase power lines are available. Smaller type commercial grade solar systems will become more common.

The principals at ISS believe that 800 KW- 1 MW solar systems provide the most “bang for the buck” and fit into the investment strategy of many high income individuals and C-Corporations that can utilize the tax credits effectively. Even if the federal government doesn’t extend the successful 1603 grant program beyond the end of 2011, the existing 30% tax credit program works just as well for most C-Corporations and should continue for several more years.
