Are there really Advantages to Solar Energy? It is all over the news, we have heard both sides of the debate, but if there are advantages, shouldn’t we decide if they are advantages to us? As consumers and concerned citizens, we should look into this viable and clean source of energy.
One of the biggest advantages to solar energy is the option to achieve energy independence for you and your home. It is something that you can transition to at your own speed and within your own budget. You can start with a simple solar powered attic fan, add a solar powered water heater, and soon you will be adding solar panels to supplement your electrical needs. Once you see the benefits…much lower power bills…you will most likely want to get off the electric grid all together. You have the ability to decide how much of the suns power you want to harness. Once you have purchased the solar powered items, there is no addition cost. You reap the benefits of the largest ball of fire ever made, using the heat and the reflection of the sun to light up your life…instead of relying on your local power company to do it.
Another advantage to solar energy is all of the tax benefits and rebates that you receive from the government and utility companies. These incentives offset the initial investment of solar powered energy, and remember, once you have the necessary tools, all of the electricity you produce is free! Free? There’s not much of that left anymore so this is definitely an advantage. The cost of solar panels is decreasing as more technology becomes available and the efficiency is definitely increasing so you can absolutely reduce or completely eliminate your electric bill. You can also sell the excess energy that you produce or get a credit from your local utility company. That means you are not only getting your power for free…you are making money on it!
One advantage of solar energy is the low maintenance on your solar products. Solar systems are long lasting and virtually maintenance free. There are no recurring costs, and warranties are 20 to 30 years long. Solar systems are ideal for remote locations that are not easily accessed by utility lines, they operate silently, and there are do it yourself options that are easy to install. I don’t know about you, but I have experienced downed power lines and that can be a real bummer…making life difficult for many days. While others are sitting in a cold dark house, you could be enjoying energy brought to you directly from the sun. You can be totally independent of the utility company by using batteries to store excess energy when the sun is at its peak.
Another major advantage to solar energy http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solar_energy is that it is clean and renewable. Even if you don’t consider yourself an environmental zealot, going clean is very important. We all know that we should reduce our dependence on foreign oil, and we all want to breathe cleaner air. We have all been told that there is an energy crisis: Various measures of energy security indicate the United States might be heading for an energy crisis of epic proportions. Not only that, but burning fossil fuels has harmed and continues to harm our environment. We owe it to ourselves to at least explore the clean option.
Decide for yourself if the advantages of solar energy are for you, but at least look into them…for yourself…and for the future generations.
